Commercial Truck Driving

Commercial Truck Drivers are responsible for transporting different types of goods from distribution centers to customer locations using a?truck. They are also required to perform inspections before and after a trip, and unload cased products from the trailer to customer facilities.

Commercial Truck Driving*

The Professional Truck Driving Program at Delta Tech offers training that takes students behind-the-wheel, onto the driving range, over-the-road training, and into the classroom, preparing students for the state licensing exam and entry-level employment. The truck driving classes students will be attending in the Professional Truck Driving Program are taught by instructors with real world experience, and will include comprehension of the state’s CDL standards, driver safety, air brakes, combination vehicles, log books, trip planning, employee and customer service relationships. Classroom training will be limited, because the Professional Truck Driving Program at Delta Tech aims to be a hands-on, interactive program teaching skills that can be applied and retained in the real world.

Pre-requisites required:
Applicants must: (1) provide proof of high school diploma or recognized equivalency or if no diploma or equivalency must possess a valid CDL permit prior to start of class, (2) be 18 years old or older (21 years or older for interstate travel), (3) possess a valid state driver?s licensed, (4) submit a copy of motor vehicle record and have no unpaid tickets anywhere in U.S., and (5) pass a DOT physical and drug screen.

Commercial Truck Driving*

Backing awareness training (into equipment hoppers, into very tight dump spaces/spots, overhead obstacles, etc.) Being loaded (via front-end loaders, bucket excavators, overhead storage silos, etc.) Safe dumping procedures and full dumping environment awareness and hazards recognition Ingress and egress of narrow truck weigh scales, wash pits, etc. Hauling 300+ degree material (hot mix asphalt) Dumping dirt/gravel materials that tend to shift/bulk during discharge Short hauls (requiring much shifting/braking) Driving over/through uneven and/or soft surfaces Rolling/unrolling trailer cover tarps Safe general maintenance that is specific to dump trailers/dump beds Following specific dumping instructions (spotter recognition and communication) Good recognition/understanding of many different materials (aggregates) appearances/properties, and their specific hauling characteristics/tendencies General telematics?? New classes starting every 8 weeks: The Professional Truck Driver Training Program at Holmes Community College is an 8-week program that prepares students to enter the commercial truck driving industry. Classes meet Monday - Friday 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. The program includes classroom, controlled driving environment, and road driving to provide instruction in operating diesel powered vehicles, DOT rules and regulations, shifting techniques, pre and post trip inspections, loading and unloading cargo, and keeping necessary records.

Commercial Truck Driving*

The Commercial Truck Driving program, located on the Olive Branch campus, prepares students for occupations in the trucking industry. It is an 8-week course which meets five days per week. In presenting the material, the instructor uses both the lecture and demonstration method of teaching with active participation and practice by the students. Upon successful completion of the 240 hours, the student is awarded a certificate and nine semester hours credit.
