Licensed Practical Nurse

LPNs are certified healthcare professionals who are responsible for providing basic patient care. LPNs necessarily carry out their job duties under the supervision of either an RN or a doctor. An LPN collects information from the patients to be admitted; regarding medical records, medical insurance details, and helps in completing other pretreatment formalities. An LPN records health details of patients; which usually comprise blood pressure, body temperature, respiration and heartbeat rate among other vital signs. LPNs help the patient prepare for medical examinations, takes test samples from patients, and administers medicines and injections prescribed by the physician to the patients.

LPN-Licensed Practical Nurse

The Practical Nursing (PN) program is a three-semester program whose mission is to prepare nurses (LPN’s) to meet basic health care needs in structured settings of acute and long-term care where policies and procedures are specified and carried out under the direction of a licensed professional nurse or other licensed healthcare provider. Critical thinking, the nursing process, communication, safety, client education, ethical-legal issues, the health-illness continuum and pharmacology are core themes used to develop content within the curriculum.

Unconditional admission to the College with a cumulative 2.0 list of Essential Functions is available in the nursing office or www.bscc.edu in the Nursing Student Handbook. 7. The Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) score will not be used in the selection of nursing applicants beginning fall 2013. 8. Admission to the Practical Nursing program is competitive, and the number of students is limited by the number of faculty and clinical facilities available. Meeting minimal requirements does not guarantee acceptance. 9. Upon conditional admission to the PN program, a clear background check will be required before enrollment in the Nursing program will be completed. 10. Upon admission, applicants must provide proof of three Hepatitis vaccinations or positive titer, MMR vaccination IgG or positive titer, Mumps vaccination IgG or positive titer, Rubella vaccination IgG or positive titer, Varicella vaccination IgG or positive titer, current tetanus (Tdap) vaccination or positive titer, and proof of current TB testing (within six months) status. Annual flu vaccine is required. 11. Upon conditional admission, applicant must provide verification of health insurance coverage, as well as, maintain their health insurance coverage throughout the nursing curriculum. grade point average at the institution. 2. Receipt of completed application to the Practical Nursing program by September 1 of each year for Spring admission. 3. GPA points for admission are based on four courses: BIO 201- Anatomy & Physiology I, BIO 202-Anatomy & Physiology II, ENG 101-English Composition, and MTH 100-Intermediate College Algebra. A higher level math can be accepted in place of MTH 100. All four courses must be complete to earn GPA points. Points will be awarded for GPA using this example, 4.0 GPA=4.0 points, 3.7 GPA=3.7 points. No minimum GPA is required to apply. 4. A minimum of ACT score of 16 is required for admission into the PN program. The ACT score must be completed within five (5) years of the application deadline. 5. Eligibility for English 101 (ENG 101) and Math 116 (MTH 116) or higher math as determined by College policy. 6. LPN-Licensed Practical Nurse

Holmes Community College is offering a hybrid Practical Nursing program to begin in the spring of 2019. Applications will be accepted Aug. 15 - Oct. 31 and the 15 applicants will be selected in November. "This is a new program option that we just got approved and we are very excited about it," Vice President of Career-Technical Education Dr. Amy Whittington said. "This will be the first of its kind in our state." The hybrid program is a part-time program that will run over five semesters starting in the spring of 2019 with the inaugural class graduating in June 2020. All classroom work will be online with lab and clinical work completed face-to-face.

Applicants must also have a minimum of a 22 on their ACT to apply, which is higher than required for the traditional Practical Nursing program at Holmes. Although college credit is not required for application to the program, applicants with any college credit must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 to be considered for selection.

The Northwest Community College Practical Nursing Program supports the mission of the college by promoting excellence in education. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age. Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED equivalency. Applicants must have an enhanced ACT composite score of 16 or greater. Applicants must have a NWCC application on file with the Registrar’s Office. Applicants must have a Practical Nursing application on file with the Practical Nursing campus/course of choice. Once a prospective student has met the criteria above, an opportunity to sit for the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) is scheduled by calling the Career-Technical Division for the Senatobia, Ashland and Oxford Campus. The DeSoto campus will communicate available testing dates and times to the applicant via email. The applicant will be required to take the TEAS test and score on the proficient level at 62 for math and reading. The fee for the TEAS test is sixty dollars. If the applicant achieves a 62 or higher on the TEAS test, consideration for enrollment will occur.
