TRAINING CENTER PROGRAMS
This program of study combines training in the technical and clinical aspects of respiratory and general education courses necessary to provide the student with the knowledge necessary to give direct care to patients with respiratory/cardiac health problems. Upon completion of this program, the student is awarded the Associate of Applied Science degree.

Pre-requisites required: 6 semesters Summary of Program Requirements All students must meet the minimum requirements of admission for Coahoma Community College and the Health Sciences Programs All students must achieve a minimum of a 17 cumulative score on the ACT Entry Examination, a minimum of a 2.0 GPA cumulative and an acceptable score on a pre-entrance assessment examination. Entry selection into the Respiratory Therapy Program is on a competitive top-down elimination scale: The highest ACT score, and; The highest Anatomy and Physiology grades The highest pre-entrance assessment exam score Selection Process Candidate files are assessed for documentation that meets all minimum admission requirements for the Respiratory Care Technology Program. Incomplete applications will not be considered for admission. A Rating Scale for Admission form is completed and scored on each candidate meeting minimum admission requirements. Respiratory Care is a two-year (five-semester) program. Graduates will receive an Associate of Applied Science degree and will be eligible to take the national credentialing exam to become a registered respiratory therapist (respiratory care practitioner).

Pre-requisites required: 2 years Summary of Program Requirements To be considered for admission to the Respiratory Care Technology program, an applicant must make application to the College and be admitted, submit the Health Science Application and meet the following criteria: 1. High school graduate or high school equivalency diploma 2. Minimum ACT score of 18 if taken on or after October, 1989. The official ACT score must be on file in the ICC Admissions office. Scores may be sent directly from ACT (www.act.org) to ICC, which can take six weeks or more, printed from ACTs website and submitted to the Admissions office by the student or sent by the students high school of attendance. (If ACT was taken while in high school, the score is typically on the high school transcript.) ACT scores on college transcripts are not acceptable. 3. Complete the following prerequisites with a grade of C or higher by May 20. ? BIO 2514 Anatomy and Physiology I ? BIO 2524 Anatomy and Physiology II ? MAT 1313 College Algebra or MAT 1314 College Algebra with Lab will be required.) 4. Qualified applicants who have submitted all required information by the April 1 deadline will have their materials reviewed. Based on the selection criteria, the highest-ranking students will be invited to a personal interview with the Respiratory Care Technology Admissions Committee. (See Respiratory Care Technology Point Rating System.) The final selection will come from the group of applicants interviewed. 5. Upon admission to the program, a student must submit a physical examination form, proof of current immunizations, BLS Provider certification to include CPR and AED in accordance with the American Heart Association (Certifications must be on or after June 1 of the year program classes begin.), a negative drug screen (administered by the North Mississippi Medical Center) and satisfactory criminal background check (administered by ICC personnel). Certain criminal offenses may prevent admission into the program; therefore, it is highly recommended the student contact his/her adviser, the program director or the Dean of Health Science Instruction for guidance related to specific thresholds for admission. Should the College allow a student with a criminal background entrance into the Respiratory Care Technology program, certain clinical affiliates may deny the student access to their facility. Itawamba Community College does not serve as an agent to prospective employers, state licensing agencies or credentialing organizations in regard to the interpretation of the criminal background check; therefore, the obtainment of criminal background clearance which permits the student to perform clinical experiences in a licensed healthcare facility while enrolled in the Respiratory Care Technology program does not guarantee a healthcare facility will employ the graduate. The Respiratory Care Technology Program offers a basic two-year associate degree program of study. Students are trained to perform clinical tasks included in the Respiratory Therapists job description and in many instances fill staff and supervisory positions in the hospital environment. Students are also trained to perform clinical tasks included in the advanced practitioner job description. Students will follow a 2-year course study designed to integrate the study of basic sciences, respiratory care and applied clinical technique as well as advanced respiratory care courses which include specialized clinical rotations. Upon completion of the program, graduates receive an Associate of Applied Science degree. After graduation the student will be eligible to take the certification examination administered by the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC). After passing this exam, students are then eligible to take the written and clinical simulation registry examinations also administered by the NBRC.

Clinical rotations may include 12-hour, 3pm-11pm shift or other non-traditional hours. Clinical experiences are provided in the hospitals below. It is important that you commit yourself to studying prior to entering the program. Students enrolled in this program will be strongly urged not to work more than twenty (20) hours a week. No unexcused absences will be accepted for clinical and classroom work. It is the intent of this program to train committed individuals to become caring, competent technicians. Good attendance is a must to accomplish this goal. Entrance to the Respiratory Care Technology Program is by way of an Admissions Committee. All applicants are scored using a point system based upon objective data including composite ACT, overall GPA, general course completed at NEMCC or transferred, and any medical experience pertinent to the field of Respiratory Care. The committee has the responsibility to screen all qualified applicants for the program who have submitted the required records and credentials prior to the published deadline. Acting upon recommendation of the Admissions Committee, Northeast Mississippi Community College notifies each applicant of the selection or rejection. The standards for admission to the program in respiratory care technology are established by the program director, clinical director, and advisory committee with approval of the college administration. The following are standards for admission to the program: Completed application to Northeast. Completed separate application to the Respiratory Care Program. (Deadline is usually May 1st.) High school transcript or G.E.D. equivalency. ACT score of 17 on the enhanced ACT. Students who have completed a minimum of 12 semester hours or credit with a 2.0 or higher grade point average will be considered if the ACT score is less than 17. Prerequisites: Anatomy and Physiology I and II (BIO 2514 and BIO 2524), Intermediate Algebra (MAT 1233) or College Algebra (MAT 1313) Transcripts from all undergraduate institutions. Interview to be scheduled with the program director and clinical director of respiratory care. No disqualifying events from Criminal Background Check (Fingerprinting) Health examination completed by a physician or nurse practitioner (This is required after admission to the program is granted). Each applicant must meet all of the above criteria and is rated using a rating scale. Admission to the program will be finalized by an admission committee. Once accepted into the program, the student must earn a grade of C or better in each respiratory care course and related studies in order to progress in the program. The Respiratory Therapy program, at the DeSoto Center, is fully accredited by the Committee on Accreditation for Respiratory Care. The Associate of Applied Science degree curriculum will prepare the graduate to assume the duties of an advanced level Respiratory Therapist. Upon successful completion of the program the graduate will be registry eligible, enabling him/her to take the national credentialing exams.

Pre-requisites required: Call for more details Summary of Program Requirements Admission to the program is on a competitive basis. Meeting minimum admission requirements does not guarantee admission into the program. It is suggested that the student speak with a Respiratory Therapy Program instructor for advising when registering for the prerequisite courses. Complete the prerequisite courses, Anatomy and Physiology I and II, before entering the program. (These may be taken during the summer before the August entrance date. The student will, however, still need to apply before May 1.) A&P I &II have to be completed with a C or better. Students that are taking A&P over the summer will only be considered if the class is not full in May. Observe a respiratory therapy department and the day-to-day activities of a therapist and complete the observation log.
