About the Job:
Automotive Service Technicians and Mechanics inspect, maintain, and repair cars and light trucks, diagnosing mechanical and electrical problems using manual and computerized tools. They perform tasks such as oil changes, brake and tire services, engine and transmission repairs, and electronic system diagnostics to keep vehicles safe, reliable, and compliant with manufacturer standards.
Education & Training Requirements:
Training pathways typically include high school career–technical programs and/or postsecondary certificates or associate degrees in automotive technology, often completed in about 1–2 years. Many technicians also complete manufacturer-specific or ASE certification training and gain skills through supervised, on-the-job experience in repair shops or dealerships.
