Job Description
Today’s healthcare reimbursement system relies heavily on medical coding. This means job opportunities for trained Medical Coding Specialists. The job of the Medical Coding Specialist is to assign and sequence diagnostic and procedural codes into a universally recognized coding system. These codes are used for reimbursement for Medicare, Medicaid and insurance payments.
Training Opportunities
The Administrative Office Technology emphasis prepares students to work in an integrated office environment of people, processes, and technologies. Students are trained to use a variety of office technology and computer-based applications. Courses taught include: Keyboard Skill building, Electronic Spreadsheets, Business Accounting, Desktop Publishing and Database Management. Students are provided training for employment as administrative assistants, office assistants, and office clerks.

Health-Care Data Technology students develop skills to manage medical information in both paper files and electronic systems. Curriculum content prepares students to code medical claims and categorize patient information for insurance reimbursement purposes in databases and registries, and to maintain patients medical and treatment histories. Industries that employ the majority of health care technicians are hospitals, physicians offices and nursing care facilities in positions including, medical records clerk, medical office assistant and medical transcriptionist.

This two-year program of study is designed to prepare students to work in office positions in hospitals, doctors’ offices, health clinics, insurance companies, and other health-related organizations. The student will develop skills using medical terminology, accounting, coding, and computer software applications. Emphasis is placed on skills needed to become a medical billing clerk or an entry-level medical coder. Students have the option to complete a 30 credit hour certificate, a 45 credit hour technical certificate, or a two-year associate of applied science degree. Upon successful completion of required coursework, students are eligible to take the AAPC Certified Professional Coder (CPC) exam.
