Job Description
Diesel technicians repair and maintain diesel equipment such as railroad locomotives, trucks, buses and construction equipment. They diagnose the trouble, disassemble parts and examine them for defects and excessive wear. They test and adjust engine parts regularly to prevent problems.
Training Opportunities
The Diesel Equipment Technology Program is an instructional and hands-on program that provides students with competencies required to maintain and repair a variety of industrial diesel equipment, including agricultural tractors, commercial trucks, and construction equipment. The program includes instruction in inspection, repair, and maintenance of engines, power trains, hydraulic systems, and other components. Diesel Equipment Technology is an articulated certificate or technical program designed to provide advanced skills to students. Baseline competencies, taken from the secondary Diesel Service Technology, serve as a foundation for the competencies and objectives taught in the courses of the program. Students needing these basic skills will be allowed to acquire them during the program. Students who can document mastery of these baseline competencies will not be required to repeat these competencies.

East Central Community College offers the Diesel Equipment Technology program at the former U.S. Motors plant in Philadelphia. The instructional program provides students with the competencies required to maintain a variety of industrial diesel equipment, including agricultural tractors, commercial trucks, and construction equipment. It will include instruction in inspecting, repairing, and maintaining engines, powertrains, hydraulic systems, and other components.
