Training Opportunities

The Practical Nursing (PN) program is a three-semester program whose mission is to prepare nurses (LPNs) to meet basic health care needs in structured settings of acute and long-term care where policies and procedures are specified and carried out under the direction of a licensed professional nurse or other licensed healthcare provider. Critical thinking, the nursing process, communication, safety, client education, ethical-legal issues, the health-illness continuum and pharmacology are core themes used to develop content within the curriculum.

Pre-requisites required:
Application deadline is September 1st. Applicants must have unconditional acceptance to the College with a 2.0 cumulative GPA. Applicant must also have a minimum ACT Score of 16 within 5 years of application deadline. GPA points for admission are based on four courses: A&P I and II with labs, English Comp I, and Intermediate College Algebra or higher math.

Summary of Program Requirements:

Holmes Community College is offering a hybrid Practical Nursing program to begin in the spring of 2019. Applications will be accepted Aug. 15 - Oct. 31 and the 15 applicants will be selected in November. "This is a new program option that we just got approved and we are very excited about it," Vice President of Career-Technical Education Dr. Amy Whittington said. "This will be the first of its kind in our state." The hybrid program is a part-time program that will run over five semesters starting in the spring of 2019 with the inaugural class graduating in June 2020. All classroom work will be online with lab and clinical work completed face-to-face.

Pre-requisites required:
Potential students must have a high school diploma or a High School Equivalency (HSE) certificate and provide official transcripts from all schools/colleges previously attended. Applicants must also have a minimum of a 22 on their ACT to apply, which is higher than required for the traditional Practical Nursing program at Holmes. Although college credit is not required for application to the program, applicants with any college credit must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 to be considered for selection.

The Northwest Community College Practical Nursing Program supports the mission of the college by promoting excellence in education. The Mission of the Practical Nursing Program is to provide academic instruction for effective learning and competent nursing care. Fulfillment of the Mission occurs by implementation of the standardized curriculum, utilization of current and effective instructional materials, and emphasizing the safety and cultural needs of the patient. The faculty seek to educate students on the vital qualities required to meet the needs of the healthcare industry. The mission of the Practical Nursing Program is in alignment as well with the Mission of the Career, Technical and Workforce Education to be the training provider for Northwest Mississippi by implementing the priorities established by the governing institution. These priorities are: Establish and/or maintain significant and formal relationships with industries/businesses related to our training programs, Make all training/instruction relevant, organized, engaging, and worth paying to participate, Focus (not at the expense of other industries) on manufacturing, transportation and healthcare industries to meet the current and future demand for employees that is beyond our current completion rates. Pre-requisites required:
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age. Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED equivalency. Applicants must have an enhanced ACT composite score of 16 or greater. Applicants must have a NWCC application on file with the Registrar’s Office. Applicants must have a Practical Nursing application on file with the Practical Nursing campus/course of choice. Once a prospective student has met the criteria above, an opportunity to sit for the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) is scheduled by calling the Career-Technical Division for the Senatobia, Ashland and Oxford Campus. The DeSoto campus will communicate available testing dates and times to the applicant via email. The applicant will be required to take the TEAS test and score on the proficient level at 62 for math and reading. The fee for the TEAS test is sixty dollars. If the applicant achieves a 62 or higher on the TEAS test, consideration for enrollment will occur.

Applicants must: (1) have a minimum ACT score of 16, (2) have high school diploma or equivalency, (3) complete the following pre-reqs: A&P I and II with lab with a grade of “C” or higher, (4) pay pre-admissions fees at the Business Office that include but is not limited to pre-entrance examinations and criminal background check by January 31st, (5) take a pre-entrance exam, and (6) be at least 18 years old. Applicants accepted into the program will have additional requirements, such as a physical exam, immunizations, TB test, and CPR/Basic Life Support certification.
