Job Description

Surgical Technicians are an important part the surgical team. In the operating room, Surgical Technician assist surgeons with instruments and equipment, as well as maintaining a sterile field. They may also help surgeons with cutting sutures, retraction of tissues and operating surgical equipment. The job requires working with a high level of speed, accuracy, skill and concentration. Employment is expected to increase in the future as baby boomers age and require more surgical procedures.

Surgical Technician

Surgical Technology is an instructional program that prepares an individual to serve as a member of the surgical team to work with surgeons, anesthesiologists and certified registered nurse anesthetists, registered nurses, and other surgical personnel in delivering patient care and assuming appropriate responsibilities before, during, and after surgery. This program includes the education of all aspects of surgical technology including the role of second assistant & circulators.The Surgical Technology Program offers classroom and clinical experiences for the entry-level surgical technologist which includes courses in aseptic technique, operative procedures, patient care, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, pharmacology, medical terminology, medical/legal aspects, technological sciences (computer, electricity & robotics), and related general education to help the student fulfill his/her role as an important, knowledgeable member of the surgical team.The goal of the Surgical Technology Program at Holmes College is to prepare competent entry-level surgical technologists in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains. Further, the Surgical Technology Department will provide students with the opportunity to develop skills and knowledge necessary to gain employment as a surgical technologist and become a contributing member of the healthcare team.

Pre-requisites required:
Submit a completed application for admission to Holmes Community College.Be at least 18 years of age.Have official verification of a minimum ACT score of 12 if taken before October 28, 1989, or 16 if taken after October 28, 1989, on file with the Office of Admissions & Records at Holmes Community College.

Length of Program:
12 month technical program | 24 month AAS

Surgical Technology, available at the Lafayette-Yalobusha Technical Center in Oxford, is an instructional program that prepares an individual to serve as a member of the surgical team to work with surgeons, anesthesiologists, certified registered nurse anesthetists, registered nurses and other surgical personnel in delivering patient care and assuming appropriate responsibilities before, during and after surgery.

Pre-requisites required:
The applicant must be at least 18 years of age, Application for admission to Northwest Mississippi Community College with required high school and college transcript(s) and ACT scores must be sent to the Senatobia campus. The applicant must be a high school graduate (diploma) or have made equivalent scores on the GED test. A transcript of all previous schooling must be on file. ACT scores are required for applicants under 21 years of age. The Applicant must complete a Program Application. The applicant shall make satisfactory scores on the TABE test. This tests is given at Lafayette-Yalobusha Technical Center. Test dates will be mailed to each applicant. After testing, the applicant will interview before an Admissions committee. If accepted into the Surgical Technology program, the applicant must have on file the following:a signed Acceptance Agreement, a health examination certificate (Student Health Record), a negative drug screen, copy of laboratory/diagnostic test, a record of immunizations, and a Criminal History Background Affidavit.

Length of Program:
Associate of Applied Science Degree - 2 year program
Vocational Certificate Program - 1 year
