Job Description

Surgical Technologists work with surgeons, anesthesiologists & certified nurse anesthetists, registered nurses & other surgical personnel in delivering patient care & assuming appropriate responsibilities before, during and after surgery. They prepare the room, instruments & equipment for surgery.

Surgical Technology is an instructional program that prepares an individual to serve as a member of the surgical team to work with surgeons, anesthesiologists, certified registered nurse anesthetists, registered nurses and other surgical personnel in delivering patient care and assuming appropriate responsibilities before, during and after surgery.

Pre-requisites required:
Applications are available January 1 – June 1. Applicants must complete a college application and a program application. Applicants must: (1) be at least 18 years old before program completion, (2) have high school diploma or equivalency, (3) be in good physical condition as verified by medical examination and certifying report, (4) have an ACT minimum composite score of 16 with a minimum of 12 in math and reading subcores, (5) have a personal interview with the Surgical Technology Admissions Committee and be recommended by Committee for admission, and (6) pay pre-admissions fees at the Business Office that include but is not limited to pre-entrance examinations and criminal background check. Applicants accepted into the program will have additional requirements, such as a physical exam, immunizations, TB test, and CPR/Basic Life Support certification.

2 year-AAS or 12 month Certificate of Surgical Technology

Surgical Technologist

Surgical Technology program is a one-year (three-semester) program. Graduates will receive a certificate of completion or with some additional academic courses may receive the Associate of Applied Science degree. The graduate is eligible to take the national credentialing exam to become a certified surgical technologist.

Surgical Technologist

Surgical Technology is an instructional program that prepares an individual to serve as a member of the surgical team to work with surgeons, anesthesiologists and certified registered nurse anesthetists, registered nurses, and other surgical personnel in delivering patient care and assuming appropriate responsibilities before, during, and after surgery. This program includes the education of all aspects of surgical technology including the role of second assistant & circulators. The Surgical Technology Program offers classroom and clinical experiences for the entry-level surgical technologist which includes courses in aseptic technique, operative procedures, patient care, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, pharmacology, medical terminology, medical/legal aspects, technological sciences (computer, electricity & robotics), and related general education to help the student fulfill his/her role as an important, knowledgeable member of the surgical team. The goal of the Surgical Technology Program at Holmes College is to prepare competent entry-level surgical technologists in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains. Further, the Surgical Technology Department will provide students with the opportunity to develop skills and knowledge necessary to gain employment as a surgical technologist and become a contributing member of the healthcare team.
