Job Description

A lineman is responsible for the installation, repair and maintenance of overhead and underground electrical power lines and auxiliary equipment. This includes work from power plants to the meters of customers homes. Demand for this type of work will never go "out of style" as long as folks use electricity. In fact, thanks to developments in the power industry, our contractors are seeing increased demand for their services - meaning they need more and more workers. With more than 500 line contractors in the organized electrical construction industry, you can be assured of meaningful, lifelong work with opportunities for advancement.

Training Opportunities

Utility Lineman

The Electric Lineworker non-credit training program is a one semester, 13-week program. Students receive specialized instruction in certification areas required by the electrical power industry. Upon completion, students are prepared for an entry-level position as an electrical power-line installer or repairer. The Lineworker Training Program will provide participants with transferable skills and experience for resumes. Participation in and completion of the program does not guarantee participants a job at Mississippi Power or another electric utility.

Utility Lineman

The Apprentice Electric Lineman program at George County Center is a one semester, 600 hour program. Students receive specialized instruction in certification areas required by the electrical power industry. Upon completion, students are prepared for an entry level position as an electrical power-line installer or repairer. By completing the 16 week program, students are eligible to receive an Undergraduate Certificate in Apprentice Electric Lineman.

Utility Lineman

The Utility Lineman Program is a 16-week certificate program designed to prepare the student for entry?level employment in the field of utility power transmission and distribution construction, troubleshooting, and repair. Along with being awarded a work-ready certificate in Utility Lineman, students will earn their OSHA 10, AHABLS-CPR, and forklifting certifications by the completion of all program requirements.
