Job Description

Educational requirements for welders vary by region and by company.  However, a large majority of employers in Mississippi do not require a four-year degree to apply for this job, as employers are typically most concerned about performance and ability over formal education. Ideal welding candidates will have a high school diploma or equivalent; an industry-recognized certificate or credential and/or technical degree from a two-year college; and/or previous work experience.  Specific certifications that may be required by employers include National Center for Construction and Education Research (NCCER) certificates and the Career Readiness Certificates (CRC) which are used as a determination of worker aptitude. 14 community colleges in Mississippi offer welding technology programs.

Training Opportunities

Welder

This twelve-month course is designed to prepare the student to enter the job labor market upon successful completion. Welding theory, electrode classification and identification, blue-print reading and welding symbol interpretation, plasma and oxyacetylene cutting, and shop safety are stressed. The student will begin with elementary welding procedures and will progress through advanced procedures. In the more advanced courses the students are taught the use of the Metal Inert Gas (MIG) Aluminum Welding and the Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) Welding on aluminum and stainless steel for special purposes.

The Welding and Cutting curriculum is designed to prepare students for entry-level employment in the field of welding and cutting. The curriculum includes the following types of welding : Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW), Plasma Arc Cutting (PAC), Carbon Arc Cutting, Oxyfuel Cutting and Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW).

Welder | Cutter | Solderer | Brazer

The Welding and Cutting Technology curriculum is designed to prepare the student for entry-level employment in the field of welding and cutting. Electives are available in advanced levels of welding and cutting. The welding competencies required in this curriculum were developed to coincide with the Guide for the Training and Qualification of Welding Personnel: Entry Level Welders (AWS EG2.10-95) and Specification for Qualification and Certification for Entry LevelWelders (AWS QC 10-95).

Welder

Program options include: a 30-hour certificate, a 45-hour technical certificate or a 60-hour AAS in Applied Science. In the Welding and Cutting Technologies Associate degree program, students learn proper methods of welding and cutting with multiple processes currently used in the trade. Students will also learn and apply safety procedures as per industry standards. Each student will receive an NCCR National Certification upon program completion.

Welder | Welding Instructor

Welding & Cutting Technology is a one-year (for credit) certificate program designed to prepare a student for employment and advancement in industrial plants and construction companies.This certificate program is well-grounded in fundamental job competencies that emphasize various kinds of welding and cutting applications. The program is located in the Structural Steel Welding and Cutting Technology Center, next to Riley Workforce Development Center. The welding center is fully equipped with state-of-the-art training equipment and a highly capable staff.
